Eye-Fi Direct Mode – Upload your photos from your DSLR to your smartphone.

Eye-Fi has been around for a while now but for those not familiar, Eye-Fi makes SD memory cards with a built in Wi-Fi transmitter.  This transmitter allows you to shoot images with your DSLR or other digital camera and have those photos transferred directly to your computer via Wi-Fi.  Pretty cool stuff huh?  Well, Eye-Fi has just done one better.  They have introduced a new merging of their Eye-Fi card and smart phone app to allow you to upload photos directly from your digital camera or DSLR to your smart phone.

So, you like having instant access to social networking sites and you want to be able to instantly show off where you are and who you are with.  So what did we do?  We left our cameras in the bag, or worse, at home (eek), and opted to use our smart phones to capture photos and video for instant upload to our favorite social networking sites.  Well with the new Eye-Fi Direct Mode, you will be able to use your trusty DSLR or favorite digital camera to take your photos and have them sent directly to your phone where you can do with them as you will.  So you already own an Eye-Fi X2 card and you don’t want to have to pay a bunch for this added connectivity?  Well you are in luck.  This feature is being added later this year via a firmware update to your Eye-Fi X2 card and it will be free.  Free is always a great deal.  So if you already use a Eye-Fi card, hang in there for your firmware upgrade.  If you don’t have an Eye-Fi card, you can check them out at the Eye-Fi website on the interweb.
